On June 24th, 2010, a day-hiker by the name of Bill Ewasko went missing in Joshua Tree National Park. After a few weeks the search was called off with no sign of him.  A year later (and several years before founding Hawk Analytics), Mike Melson began researching the case to determine whether his cellular engineering background could help.  Although that early research did not lead to finding Mr. Ewasko, it did convince Melson cell phone data COULD be of help to law enforcement.  The processes pioneered in the case were among the first of its kind and were foundational to the methods we use and teach for cell site data analysis here at Hawk Analytics.

In February 2022, almost 12 years after he went missing, Mr. Ewasko was finally located.  Join us as we review that early research, the search plans it developed, the clues it yielded, the lessons that can be learned; and, the ultimate results of the case.

Hawk Analytics is humbled and grateful to share this three-part, can’t miss HawkTalk series about the abduction and murder of Kelsey Smith.  Our guest presenter is Greg Smith, Kelsey’s father, a grieving parent and law enforcement professional turned legislator and advocate who’s on a life-long mission to ensure this NEVER happens to another parent or law enforcement agency.  Part 1 is a heart-wrenching overview of the abduction and subsequent investigation into her murder.

Originally aired: January 20, 2021

Part 2 will go deep into the first 48 hours of the investigation, with a review of the crime scene processing and collection of physical evidence, surveillance video examination, and law enforcement’s effort to obtain cell phone exigent records.  Greg discusses the collaborative work of local, state and federal investigators, as well as the importance of leveraging and maximizing community volunteers, the mainstream media, and prime-time talk shows.  A detailed review of the suspect’s persona is also presented.

Originally aired: January 21, 2021

In Part 3, Greg reviews lessons learned and how law enforcement agencies can be better prepared for if and when this happens again.  The case made national news and led to Greg and Missey Smith starting the Kelsey Smith Foundation®, which in turn led to the passing of the Kelsey Smith Act – A law that allows law enforcement immediate access to the location of a wireless device when a person is believed to be in danger of serious bodily harm or death.  Greg also reviews case law and how you can help pass The Kelsey Smith Act in your state.
